Faith, Culture and Violence: A workshop for church & faith leaders
Event Details: Thursday, October 2, 2014 | 1pm to 4pm | Brethren Service Center 500 Main Street, New Windsor MD Zigler Hall, 2nd floor | This is a live workshop open to all church and faith leaders in Carroll County, Maryland.
Rape, domestic violence, child sex abuse and other forms of sexual and gender based violence (SGBV) are far too common in our hurting world. One in six women has been the victim of an attempted or completed rape in her lifetime. One in every four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime. These are more than just statistics; these are people’s lives.
Yet shame and fear of judgment keep victims in silence.
Often, a faith leader will be the first person a victim of abuse will confide in – and this first response can directly impact the victim’s next step, for better or worse. Are you ready for that responsibility?
This workshop will include:
- A presentation and discussion on “Rape Culture” (i.e. how our culture condones and even glorifies SGBV)
- Tips for how faith leaders can respond and talk to victims of violence to put them on a path of healing, rather than re-victimization
- Recommendations and resources for making churches safer spaces for healing and the prevention of violence.
